1) What pressure and temperature can the Watts LF777SI bronze wye strainer handle?
400 PSI WOG at 210 degrees F, and 125 PSI WSP for steam service at 353 degrees F. That covers domestic water, hydronic heating and chilled water loops as well as low pressure steam. In bar terms the cold water rating is 27.6 BAR.
2) Can I add a blowdown valve to this Watts wye strainer without pulling the cap?
Yes. The retainer cover is tapped with a 1/2 inch (15 mm) female threaded blowdown port and ships with a brass closure plug installed. Pull the plug and thread in a 1/2 inch NPT ball valve if you want to flush the screen without shutting down and breaking the cap loose. Leave the plug in if you don't need it.
3) Can I use this Watts strainer on a fire protection line?
No. The 0379114 is not UL listed and is not approved for UL fireline service. For sprinkler or fire pump suction duty you need a strainer specifically listed for fire protection. This one is for domestic water, hydronic and steam service.
4) How fine is the screen in the Watts 0379114 strainer, and what is it made of?
It carries a 20 mesh stainless steel screen. That's a general-purpose mesh for catching pipe scale, solder beads, weld slag and grit ahead of pumps, control valves, meters and backflow preventers. Stainless means it won't rust out the way a plated screen can on a wet line.
5) Is the Watts LF777SI strainer lead free for potable water?
The retainer cover is a lead free cast copper silicon alloy, which is the LF in the LF777SI series designation. The body is brass and there is no epoxy coating on it.
6) Which way does a wye pattern strainer like the Watts 0379114 get installed?
Wye body, so the screen pocket sits at an angle off the run. Install it with the pocket pointing down on horizontal pipe so debris collects by gravity and drains out when you blow it down, or pointing sideways if headroom under the pipe is tight. Flow direction follows the arrow on the body, inlet to outlet, both 1-1/4 inch NPT.
7) What is the seal on the Watts 0379114 retainer cap made of, and does that limit the fluid?
The cap gasket is NBR (nitrile). Nitrile is fine for water, glycol and hydronic service within the 210 degree F rating, but it is not the right seal for oils that attack nitrile or for high temperature steam duty run continuously at the upper limit. Keep an eye on the 125 PSI steam rating at 353 degrees F if the line is steam.
