ASC Engineered Solutions 310027602 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use a black malleable iron street elbow on a gas line?
Black malleable iron threaded fittings are the normal choice for black iron gas piping, and this one is black finish malleable iron built to ASME B16.3 with NPT threads. It is not galvanized, so keep it off potable water lines where galvanized or a corrosion-resistant material is specified. Always follow the fuel gas code in force for your jurisdiction on the piping system as a whole.
2) Does ASTM A-197 malleable iron matter, or is cast iron the same thing?
They are not the same. ASTM A-197 malleable iron is heat treated so it has real ductility, which is why it tolerates thread cutting, wrench torque, and vibration in a threaded piping system. Gray cast iron is brittle by comparison and is not used for screwed pipe fittings like this. If a spec calls out malleable iron fittings, A-197 is what it means.
