ASC Engineered Solutions 311001200 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is this galvanized elbow approved for fire sprinkler piping?
It carries UL/FM approval, so it is acceptable for fire protection piping where the authority having jurisdiction requires listed fittings. It is a standard weight (STD) class malleable iron fitting pressure rated to ASME B16.3.
2) Will this 1 inch elbow meet a spec calling out ASME B16.3 Class 150 malleable iron fittings?
Dimensions and pressure rating both follow ASME B16.3, and the fitting is standard weight (STD) class, which is the 150 class in that standard. Material is ASTM A-197 malleable iron with an ASTM A-153 hot dip galvanized coating and ASME B1.20.1 threads, which is the usual four-line callout on a plumbing drawing.
3) Is this a reducing elbow or same size on both ends?
Same size straight through: 1 inch by 1 inch. If you need to step down in the turn, you want a reducing elbow, not this one.
4) Can I use a galvanized malleable iron elbow on a water line, or should it be black iron?
Galvanized is the version to use on water, and this one is hot dip galvanized to ASTM A-153 over ASTM A-197 malleable iron. Black malleable iron of the same pattern is the one used on gas and dry systems. Match the fitting to the pipe already in the run, galvanized to galvanized, so you are not creating a dissimilar-coating joint.
5) Do I need pipe dope or tape on these threads?
Yes. The ends are tapered NPT female threads per ASME B1.20.1, and a taper thread joint seals on the thread flank, so it needs a thread sealant or PTFE tape to be leak tight. Nothing is included with the fitting.
