1) Can the Red Dot DIH4-1-LM weatherproof box be used outdoors in a wet location?
Yes. The DIH4-1-LM is a Dry-tite type weatherproof box, rated for dry, damp and wet locations, so exterior walls and unprotected outdoor runs are within its intended use. It is UL file E28688. Pair it with a weatherproof cover and gasket suited to the device you are mounting to keep the wet-location rating intact.
2) Is 17.3 cubic inches enough volume for a single receptacle and pigtails in this Red Dot box?
17.3 cubic inches is the usable volume of this 1-gang Red Dot box. For box fill, a single receptacle counts as two conductor volumes plus the conductors entering and any equipment grounds and clamps, so at 2.25 cubic inches per 12 AWG conductor you have room for roughly seven 12 AWG equivalents, or about nine at 14 AWG (2.0 each). A straight-through 12 AWG feed with one receptacle and a ground fits comfortably; a three-way splice point with a device gets tight.
3) Does the Red Dot DIH4-1-LM come with a cover, or do I order that separately?
The DIH4-1-LM is the box only, sold each. The weatherproof cover (flip lid, duplex, GFCI, toggle, or a blank) is a separate order, and so is the gasket if the cover does not include one. Decide the device first, then match the cover opening to it.
4) Will this Red Dot box hold up in a coastal or corrosive environment?
It is built from die cast aluminum, specifically alloy A380, with certified zinc alloy hardware and stainless steel springs for added corrosion resistance. That combination suits exterior and washdown areas. For direct salt spray exposure or chemical plants, many specifiers still move to a PVC or stainless enclosure instead of aluminum.
5) Does the aluminum Red Dot box provide an equipment ground path, or do I still need a ground wire?
Being die cast aluminum with threaded hubs, the box is conductive and bonds to rigid or IMC conduit through the hub threads. That does not remove the need for an equipment grounding conductor where your wiring method or the local inspector requires one, and devices like GFCI receptacles should be bonded with a grounding pigtail to the box screw.
6) Will the Red Dot DIH4-1-LM match the finish of other weatherproof boxes already on my building?
It is a silver, natural-finish die cast aluminum box, which is the standard unpainted look on most weatherproof boxes. If your existing boxes were specified in gray or bronze powder coat, this one will not match visually and will need painting.
