Metallics JFM154 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a Metallics JFM154 10-24 machine screw thread into a standard 10-24 tapped device or box hole?
Yes. The JFM154 is cut to 10-24 UNC coarse thread at 24 threads per inch, made to ANSI/ASME B1.1, so it mates with any standard 10-24 tapped hole, including the 10-24 holes found in outlet boxes, mounting brackets and enclosure flanges. Being a machine screw, it needs a tapped hole or a nut; it will not form its own thread in sheet metal.
2) Does a flat head slotted screw sit flush, and what countersink do I need?
Flat head means a conical head that seats flush in a countersunk hole. On the JFM154 the head measures 0.333 to 0.362 in. across and 0.098 to 0.116 in. high, so a standard 82 degree countersink sized for a #10 flat head will bring it level with the surface. If your hole is a plain drilled hole with no countersink, the head will stand proud and you want a round or pan head instead.
3) Is the JFM154 sold individually or do I have to buy a full jar?
These ship in a jar with a 100 count order minimum, so the buying unit is a 100 piece jar rather than a loose screw. Shipping weight on the jar is 2.87 lbs. For MRO stockrooms that is the convenient part, one jar of 10-24 x 6 in. flat heads covers a lot of jobs, but it does mean you cannot pull just a handful.
4) Why would I need a 6 inch long 10-24 machine screw instead of a short one?
The 6 inch length under the head is for reaching through deep build-ups, think ganged box extensions, thick plaster rings, stacked spacers, or mounting a device through insulation or a deep trim collar back to a tapped bracket. At 10-24 that much length also lets you cut it down on site to whatever grip you actually need, which is why electricians keep long machine screws in the van.
5) Are these zinc plated screws OK outdoors or in a damp location?
Zinc plating on steel is a mild indoor corrosion coating. It holds up in dry interior and most electrical enclosure work, but it will eventually white rust and then red rust in wet, washdown, coastal or chemically aggressive spots. For exterior, roof, or wet location work step up to a stainless machine screw rather than this steel zinc version.
6) Do these machine screws meet a recognized dimensional standard for submittals?
Yes, the JFM154 is made to ASME B18.6.3-1998 for the head and body dimensions and ANSI/ASME B1.1 for the thread form. That pairing is what a spec reviewer or institutional purchasing agent usually wants to see on a fastener submittal, since it fixes head diameter, head height and thread fit rather than leaving them to the vendor.
7) Can these be used on a federally funded job with Buy American or ARRA requirements?
Metallics lists the JFM154 as both ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant, with country of origin China. Compliance flags on fasteners are program specific, so match the flag to the clause your contract actually cites before you submit it on a government or publicly funded project.
8) I need a different length or a different quantity of 10-24 flat head slotted screws, is that possible?
The FM and FMP series covers other sizes and quantities beyond the 10-24 x 6 in. JFM154, available by request. If you are standardizing a stockroom on one thread size, that lets you keep the same 10-24 UNC thread and flat slotted head across several grip lengths.
