1) Will a 10-24 x 6 inch round head machine screw thread into a standard electrical box or device ring?
The Metallics JRM154SLT is a 10-24 thread machine screw at 24 threads per inch, which is the thread used on electrical boxes, device rings, fixture straps and plaster rings. At 6 inches long it is the length you reach for when you need to pull a fixture canopy or device through deep mud rings, extension rings or stacked box extensions. For normal flush box work a much shorter 10-24 screw is the right call.
2) How big is the round head on these 10-24 screws, and will it sit flush?
It won't sit flush. The round head measures 0.334 to 0.359 inch across and stands 0.123 to 0.137 inch above the surface, so it's a raised dome that bears on top of the material. If you need the head buried, you want a flat head machine screw cut into a countersunk hole instead. The upside of the round head here is a wider bearing surface against sheet metal and a slot you can still drive with a flat blade.
3) Are these screws strong enough to hang a light fixture from a box?
Rated at 60,000 psi minimum tensile strength, with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100, made from low carbon steel in the AISI 1006 to 1022 range. That is standard commercial machine screw stock and it is what fixture straps and device mounting are specified around. It is not a Grade 5 or Grade 8 structural bolt, so don't substitute it where a high strength fastener is called out on a drawing.
4) Can I use these zinc plated steel screws outdoors or in a damp location?
Zinc plated carbon steel gives you indoor corrosion protection, nothing more. In wet, coastal, or washdown locations the plating will eventually rust through and the screw seizes in the thread. For exterior or damp work, specify a stainless machine screw in the same 10-24 thread instead.
