Metallics JTEK18P – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I need to pre-drill a pilot hole for these #10 x 1-1/4 in. Metallics screws?
No pilot hole. The JTEK18P is a Type BSD self-drilling and tapping screw, meaning the point drills its own hole and the 16 threads-per-inch thread cuts its own thread in one pass. Just drive it straight into the panel with steady pressure.
2) Will a pan head screw sit flush, or do I need a flat head for a countersunk hole?
Pan head sits on top of the surface, it does not sink. The JTEK18P head measures 0.357 to 0.373 inch across and 0.122 to 0.133 inch high, so it leaves a low rounded boss above the panel with a broad bearing surface for clamping sheet metal, straps, or a device. If your hole is countersunk and you need the head below the surface, you want a flat or trim head screw instead.
3) Can I use these on a federally funded job with domestic content requirements?
No. The JTEK18P is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. For a project with domestic sourcing language in the contract you need a declared domestic fastener.
4) What size driver bit do I need for the JTEK18P pan head screws?
A #2 Phillips bit. The recess is a Phillips with a 0.192 inch recess diameter and the specified driver size is #2. A #1 bit will cam out and chew the recess, a #3 will not seat.
5) How many Metallics JTEK18P screws come in a jar and is there a minimum order?
They ship in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum. The packed jar weighs 0.87 lbs.
6) Are these self-drilling screws tough enough to drive into steel without snapping the head off?
The JTEK18P is case hardened to Rockwell C32-40 with a minimum torsional strength of 61 lb-in. That is the spec that keeps the shank from twisting off while the point is cutting. Back off the clutch on an impact driver and let the point do the work rather than stalling it against the panel.
7) Is a zinc plated steel screw OK for outdoor or damp locations?
The JTEK18P is zinc plated steel, which is a dry indoor finish. It handles normal interior electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work, but for exterior, wet, corrosive, or coastal exposure specify a stainless self-drilling screw instead of zinc.
8) What standards do the Metallics JTEK screws meet?
Dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2010 and the thread and drill screw requirements follow SAE J78-2013. Note that SAE J78 does not cover #7 diameter drill screws, so if a spec calls out a #7 you will not find it under that standard.
