Metallics JTS51 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What kind of screw is the Metallics JTS51, and what material will it bite into?
The JTS51 is a Type A tapping screw, #10 diameter by 1-3/4 inch long, with a gimlet (sharp) point and 12 threads per inch. A Type A with a gimlet point is the coarse-thread sheet metal screw meant to be driven into thin sheet metal, sheet steel boxes and straps, and similar light-gauge material where the screw forms its own thread as it goes. It is not a machine screw, so it will not thread into a tapped 10-32 hole.
2) Can I use these screws on a Buy American or ARRA-funded job?
No. The JTS51 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. For federally funded work with domestic sourcing requirements you will need a fastener specified as compliant.
3) What size Phillips bit drives the Metallics JTS51 #10 pan head screw?
A #2 Phillips bit. The recess is 0.186 to 0.199 inch in diameter, 0.124 inch deep, with a 0.031 inch recess width, which is standard #2 geometry. Using a #1 will cam out and chew the recess; a #3 will not seat.
4) Will the Metallics JTS51 zinc tapping screw hold up outdoors or in a damp location?
The JTS51 is carbon steel with a zinc plating, which is an indoor and dry-location finish. Zinc plate gives light corrosion resistance for interior electrical, plumbing and HVAC work, but for wet, exterior or coastal exposure you want stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized fasteners instead.
5) How tough are these screws? Will they snap when driven with an impact driver?
Torsional strength is 48 lb-in minimum, with the screw case hardened to Rockwell C28 to 38 and made from AISI 1016 to 1024 steel. That is enough to form threads in sheet metal, but 48 lb-in is not much against an unregulated impact driver, so set the clutch low on a drill/driver and finish by feel rather than hammering it home.
6) Do the Metallics JTS51 screws meet a dimensional standard for spec work?
Yes. Head and recess dimensions are built to ASME B18.6.3-2013 and the thread conforms to ASME B18.6.4. Worth noting for anyone standardizing across a facility: dimensions for #9 diameter screws in the JTS family fall outside ASME B18.6.4, but the JTS51 is a #10, so it is covered.
7) How are the Metallics JTS51 tapping screws packaged, and what is the minimum order?
They ship in a jar of 100, and 100 is the minimum order quantity. Jar weight is 1.14 lbs. Other diameters, lengths and pack quantities in the JTS series are available by request.
