Metallics JTS27M 10 x 3/4 in. Pan Head Phillips Sharp Point Tapping Screws - Steel Zinc - Each

Type A tapping screws are made for sheet metal work, and the Metallics JTS27M uses a gimlet (sharp) point that starts into thin gauge metal and forms its own thread as it drives. Field application on record is sheet metal. For heavier stock, drill a pilot sized to the minor diameter; the sharp point helps start the screw but does not drill like a self-drilling point.

Both the Buy American and ARRA fields on the JTS27M are flagged compliant, which is what a public works or federally funded spec package asks for on fasteners. Country of origin is listed as multiple.

A #2 Phillips bit. The recess is 0.186 to 0.199 in. in diameter and 0.124 in. deep, so a worn or undersized bit will cam out and chew the recess before the screw seats. Keep a fresh #2 in the gun for a 1000 piece run.

The pan head measures 0.357 to 0.373 in. across and stands 0.122 to 0.133 in. above the surface. That is a rounded, non countersunk profile, so it sits proud of the work. If you need a flush face under a cover plate or trim, a pan head is the wrong choice and you want a flat head screw instead.

The JTS27M is zinc plated carbon steel with a silver finish. Zinc plating is an indoor and protected location coating: it handles normal building interiors, panel work and duct fine, but in wet, coastal or chemically exposed areas it will corrode. For those, specify stainless or hot dip galvanized fasteners instead.

Threads run 12 per inch, UNC form, over a 3/4 in. length. With a Type A thread you want at least two to three threads through the back of the material for holding power, so 3/4 in. gives plenty of engagement in sheet metal and light gauge stock while leaving room for a strap or clip under the head.
