1) Should I order a street elbow or a regular 90 for a tight turn off a valve or tee?
Use the street ell when the turn has to happen right at the outlet. Its male end threads straight into the female port of a valve, tee, or coupling, so you save the close nipple and roughly a fitting's worth of takeout. A standard 90 with two female ends needs a nipple on both sides. The ASC 1-1/2 inch version is FPT on one end, MPT on the other, extra heavy black malleable iron.
2) Do I need thread sealant with this fitting, or does it seal on its own?
The threads are NPT taper per ASME B1.20.1, so they need pipe dope or PTFE tape rated for the service. Taper threads seal on the metal-to-metal wedge plus sealant, not on a gasket. For gas service use a sealant approved for gas; for fire protection follow what the system spec allows. Sealant is not supplied with the elbow.
