ASC Engineered Solutions 310508809 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is this malleable iron 90 approved for fire sprinkler piping?
It carries a UL/FM listing, so it's acceptable for fire protection piping where a listed fitting is required. It's an extra heavy (class 300) malleable iron fitting with NPT threads to ASME B1.20.1. Your AHJ still governs the installation.
2) Can I use a black malleable iron elbow on a water line, or is it only for gas?
Black malleable iron is the standard choice for natural gas and propane, fire sprinkler, and low pressure steam or compressed air. For potable water it's the wrong material, since the black finish is bare iron with no corrosion protection and will rust internally. Galvanized malleable iron or copper is what goes on potable water.
3) What is the material grade of this ASC Engineered Solutions 2 inch street ell?
The casting is malleable iron to ASTM A-197, the standard grade for threaded malleable iron pipe fittings. That governs the mechanical properties of the body; the dimensions come from ASME B16.3.
4) How do I order the right part number for a 2 inch extra heavy black street elbow?
The ASC Engineered Solutions part number is 310508809. It's a single configuration: 2 inch by 2 inch, FPT by MPT, extra heavy, black malleable iron. There's no handing or finish to specify.
