1) What is the difference between a street elbow and a regular 90 degree elbow in 1-1/4 inch black iron?
A regular elbow has female threads on both ends, so you need a nipple to join it to another fitting. The ASC Engineered Solutions 1-1/4 inch black malleable iron 90 street ell has one female NPT end and one male NPT end, so it threads straight into the female port of a valve, another fitting, or a pipe coupling without a nipple in between. That saves a joint and about two inches of makeup length in tight equipment rooms.
2) Will this 1-1/4 inch street ell thread onto standard black steel pipe?
Yes. Both ends are cut to ASME B1.20.1, which is standard NPT taper thread, so the male end screws into any 1-1/4 inch female NPT port and the female end takes 1-1/4 inch threaded black steel pipe or a nipple. Use pipe dope or PTFE tape on the taper as usual.
3) Is this a standard or extra heavy pattern malleable iron fitting?
Standard pattern, Class 150. It is made to ASTM A-197 malleable iron with pressure ratings per ASME B16.3. If the drawing calls for Class 300 extra heavy, this is not the fitting to order.
4) Does a street elbow change the makeup dimensions compared to a standard elbow?
Center-to-end on the female side follows the same ASME B16.3 standard elbow dimension, but the male end replaces what would otherwise be a close nipple, so the overall assembly is shorter. Lay it out as elbow plus male thread engagement rather than elbow plus nipple when you figure your run.
