ASC Engineered Solutions 310016407 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the difference between a street elbow and a regular 90 degree elbow?
A street elbow has one female end and one male end, so it threads directly into a fitting or valve without a nipple in between. The ASC Engineered Solutions 3/4 inch black malleable iron 90 street ell is FPT on one end and MPT on the other. A standard 90 elbow is female on both ends and needs a nipple to connect to another fitting. Use the street ell where you need to change direction tight against a valve, union, or another fitting and have no room for a close nipple.
2) Will this 3/4 street elbow thread onto standard black iron pipe?
Yes. Threads are cut to ASME B1.20.1, the NPT taper thread standard used on black iron and steel pipe, so it makes up with any 3/4 inch NPT pipe or fitting. Both ends are 3/4 inch, one female (FPT), one male (MPT).
3) Can I use a black malleable iron street elbow on a gas line?
Black malleable iron 90 street ells of this type are the standard fitting for natural gas and propane piping, along with fuel oil, steam, and air. The black finish is an uncoated mill finish, not galvanized, so keep it off potable water lines where galvanized or brass is called for. The body is malleable iron to ASTM A-197 at standard (STD) pressure class per ASME B16.3.
4) Is this a Class 150 or Class 300 malleable fitting?
It is the standard class, listed as STD strength, with its pressure rating set by ASME B16.3. If your drawing calls out extra heavy for higher pressure service, this is not the fitting for that line.
5) How much does a 3/4 inch black malleable 90 street ell weigh for a takeoff?
0.41 lbs each. Useful when you are figuring hanger spacing and total load on a run with a lot of directional changes, or pricing out freight on a bulk fitting order.
6) Do I need pipe dope or tape on the male end of this street elbow?
Yes. The threads are NPT taper per ASME B1.20.1, which seals on thread interference and always needs a sealant, either a PTFE paste rated for the service or gas rated tape. The female FPT end needs it on the mating male thread the same way.
