Metallics JFM196 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the flat head on the JFM196 screw sit flush in a countersunk hole?
It does, provided the hole is countersunk. The flat head measures 0.38 to 0.412 inch across with a head height of 0.112 to 0.132 inch, so in a properly chamfered or countersunk hole the top of the head finishes level with the surface. In a plain drilled hole the head will stand proud by that head height.
2) Can I use the JFM196 screws on a Buy American or ARRA funded job?
No. These screws are not Buy American compliant and are not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On a federally funded project with domestic sourcing requirements you will need a domestically produced machine screw instead.
3) What screwdriver fits these Metallics 12-24 flat head machine screws?
A flat blade driver. The drive is a single slot, 0.056 to 0.067 inch wide and 0.039 to 0.06 inch deep. Use a cabinet or keystone tip that matches that slot width so the blade seats fully, which is also what keeps the screw from camming out when you are working one handed in a box.
4) How are these 12-24 x 1/2 in. machine screws packaged, and what is the smallest quantity I can buy?
They come in a jar of 100, which is also the order minimum. The filled jar weighs 0.59 lbs. That pack size suits a service van or an MRO stockroom bin rather than a single repair.
5) Will zinc plated screws hold up outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
Zinc plated steel is a dry interior finish. It gives moderate corrosion resistance for indoor boxes, panels and enclosures, but in wet locations, outdoors or in washdown areas the plating will eventually rust through. For those openings specify a stainless machine screw in the same 12-24 x 1/2 in. size instead.
6) Is a 1/2 inch long 12-24 screw long enough, or should I go longer?
At 1/2 inch of overall length with a flat head, the usable grip is the full 1/2 inch since a flat head sinks into the countersink. That is enough for sheet steel, device straps, covers and thin brackets. Stacking a plate plus a gasket or spacer will usually need a longer screw. Other lengths in the same FM and FMP series are available by request.
7) Do these Metallics machine screws meet a dimensional spec I can put on a submittal?
Yes. Head and slot dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-1998 for slotted flat head machine screws, and the thread is to ANSI/ASME B1.1. Material is AISI 1006-1022 carbon steel. Those three are the figures a spec reviewer will ask for.
