Black malleable iron is the normal choice for gas piping; galvanized is generally used on water and air service. This elbow is black finish malleable iron to ASTM A-197 with NPT threads to ASME B1.20.1. Do not use it on potable water, where black iron will rust.
2) What does STD strength mean on a malleable iron fitting, and when do I need extra heavy instead?
STD is the standard pressure class under ASME B16.3, which covers the large majority of gas, air, and sprinkler work at ordinary line pressures. Extra heavy (XH, Class 300) fittings are specified when the drawing calls for a higher working pressure. If the spec sheet on your job says Class 300, this STD fitting is not the right part.
