Watts W9100 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size and thread connections does the Watts 9100 pressure reducing valve have?
Both ends are 1/2 inch NPT female on the Watts LFU5B-Z3, model 9100. The inlet is a female threaded NPT union connection and the outlet is female threaded NPT, so it threads directly onto 1/2 inch iron pipe size nipples or onto adapters off copper. The union end is what lets you pull the valve for service without cutting the line.
2) Do I still need a separate thermal expansion tank if I install this PRV on a closed system with a water heater?
The LFU5B-Z3 has a built in thermal expansion bypass, which relieves excess pressure from heated water back toward the supply side rather than letting it build against a closed valve. That addresses the pressure spike a standard PRV creates when it closes the system. It is not a substitute for an expansion tank where local code requires one on a water heater, so follow the inspector's call on that.
3) Does this valve have a built in strainer, or do I need to install one ahead of it?
A stainless steel strainer is integral to the valve, so you do not need a separate inline strainer upstream just to protect the seat. It still needs to be accessible for cleaning, so leave room at the valve and plan on isolation valves either side.
4) Does the Watts 9100 come with a pressure gauge?
No gauge is supplied with the 9100. If you want to read and dial in the downstream setting, plan on a gauge on the outlet piping or a test gauge on a hose bibb. The adjustment range is 25 to 75 psi, so you need some way to read pressure to set it deliberately rather than leaving it at the factory 50 psi.
5) Can I use this PRV on a hot water line or a recirculation loop?
Temperature rating runs from 33 F up to 160 F (0.5 C to 71 C), so it will handle domestic hot water at typical storage temperatures. Above 160 F it is out of spec. The low end also means it cannot be installed where the line can freeze, so keep it inside conditioned space or insulated.
6) I manage a building with hard or aggressive water. Will this valve hold up?
The 9100 body carries a corrosion resistant coating over the lead free copper silicon alloy, and the working parts you would expect to wear, the trim and the strainer, are stainless steel. The seat disc is EPDM. That combination is what Watts puts on this series for both commercial and residential potable service.
7) What is the Watts part number for the 1/2 inch LFU5B-Z3 pressure reducing valve?
The manufacturer part number is 9100, in the Watts LFU5B-Z3 series. That is the 1/2 inch NPT female union by NPT female configuration with the integral stainless strainer and thermal expansion bypass, factory set at 50 psi.
