Watts 9180 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe size and connection does the Watts 0009180 pressure reducing valve use?
The Watts LFU5B-Z3, model 9180, is a 1-1/4 inch valve with female NPT threads on both the inlet and outlet. The inlet side is a union connection, so you can break the valve out for service without cutting the line. If your run is copper, you will need threaded adapters or dielectric unions to land on the NPT ends.
2) Do I still need a separate thermal expansion tank if I install this Watts valve on a system with a water heater?
The LFU5B-Z3 has a built-in thermal expansion bypass, so when city pressure rises above the outlet setting, expanded water can relieve back into the supply main instead of building against a closed check. That handles pressure fluctuation from the street, not the volume a water heater generates during a heating cycle. On a closed system with a heater, follow your local code for expansion control on the hot side.
3) Is the Watts 0009180 lead free and suitable for drinking water lines?
The body is a lead free copper silicon alloy with a corrosion resistant coating, which is what you specify on potable water service for both commercial and residential work. It is the lead free version of the U5B pattern, carried as the LFU5B-Z3 series.
4) Does the Watts 9180 pressure reducing valve include a strainer, or do I need to pipe one in ahead of it?
A stainless steel strainer is integral to the valve, so no separate Y-strainer is required upstream for the valve's own protection. Trim is stainless as well and the seat disc is EPDM. Leave clearance at the strainer so it can be pulled and cleaned, especially on well water or after a main break.
5) What inlet pressure and water temperature can this Watts reducing valve handle?
Maximum working pressure is 300 psi (20.7 bar), so it handles high street pressure and the surges that come with it. Temperature range runs 33 F to 160 F, which is 0.5 C to 71 C. That 160 F ceiling means it belongs on the cold supply, not on a hot water recirculation line.
6) Is this Watts valve a standard PRV or the high pressure type for tall buildings?
It is the standard style, adjustable 25 to 75 psi. There is no high pressure reduced pressure range on this model, so if your design calls for a reduced setting above 75 psi, such as a high rise riser zone, this is not the valve for that duty and you need a high pressure PRV instead.
7) I manage several buildings with the older bronze Watts U5B valves. Will the 9180 match what is already installed?
The 9180 is the lead free LFU5B-Z3 version of the same 1-1/4 inch pattern, with female NPT union inlet and female NPT outlet. On an existing threaded installation of the same size, it lands on the same connections, and the union lets you swap the body without disturbing the piping. Set it to whatever the old valve was tuned to; it arrives at 50 psi.
8) Does the Watts 9180 come with a pressure gauge?
No gauge is supplied with this one. If you want to read outlet pressure at the valve for setting or for a service log, plan on a tee and gauge downstream, or spec the gauge-equipped version of the series instead.
