Watts 9309 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size and thread connections does the Watts 0009309 pressure reducing valve have?
It's a 1 inch valve, NPT female on both ends. The inlet is a union female threaded connection and the outlet is a plain female thread. The union on the inlet side means you can break the valve out for service without cutting pipe or unthreading the whole run, which is the main reason to spec the union version on a line you'll have to maintain.
2) What pressure will the Watts 9309 reducing valve be set at out of the box, and can I change it?
Factory setting is 50 psi (3.4 bar). The adjustment range is 25 to 75 psi, or 1.7 to 5.2 bar, so you can dial it up or down within that band on site. If your job calls for a reduced pressure above 75 psi, this isn't the valve for it.
3) Is this Watts valve lead free and OK for potable drinking water?
The body is a lead free copper silicon alloy, which is what Watts uses on its LF potable-water line. The internal disc is EPDM. That combination is what gets specified for domestic cold and hot water service in commercial and residential buildings.
4) Does the Watts LF25AUB-Z3 handle thermal expansion from a water heater?
Yes, it has a built-in thermal expansion bypass. When the water heater fires and downstream pressure rises above inlet pressure, the bypass lets that expanded volume push back toward the main instead of trapping it in the building and popping the T and P relief. That said, the bypass only relieves back to the street when street pressure is lower, so on a system with a backflow preventer or check upstream you still need a proper expansion tank.
5) Do I need to install a separate strainer ahead of this pressure reducing valve?
No separate strainer is required on the inlet. The valve has an integral stainless steel strainer, so debris off a municipal main or a repaired service line gets caught before it reaches the seat. Leave enough clearance at the valve to pull and clean that strainer, because a fouled screen shows up as low flow downstream and gets misdiagnosed as a failed valve.
6) Can I use the Watts 0009309 on a hot water line?
Yes. Maximum operating temperature is 180 F (82 C), which covers domestic hot water recirculation and heater outlet service. The low end is 33 F (0.5 C), so it must be kept out of freezing conditions, unheated attics, exterior walls and unconditioned crawl spaces included.
7) What inlet pressure can this Watts reducing valve take? My building sees high street pressure.
Maximum working pressure is 300 psi (20.7 bar), so high-pressure municipal services and pumped mains are within range. The reduced side is what you set, anywhere from 25 to 75 psi.
8) Does the Watts 9309 come with a pressure gauge?
No gauge is supplied with it. If you want to verify the setting rather than adjust by feel, plan on a gauge downstream, or the simple trick of a hose-bib gauge on the nearest sillcock when you dial in the 25 to 75 psi setting.
9) Is this the standard PRV or a high-pressure model?
Standard valve style, standard reduced pressure range. The high-pressure reduced range option does not apply to the 9309, so if the spec on your drawing calls for a high reduced pressure setting above 75 psi you need a different Watts model rather than this one.
10) Is this valve coated for corrosive or buried service?
There's no corrosion resistant coating on it. It's a bare lead free copper silicon alloy body meant for indoor or pit-protected potable water service, not for direct burial or an aggressive exterior environment.
