Watts 9257 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Watts LF25AUB-Z3 3/4 inch pressure reducing valve thread onto my existing 3/4 inch copper stub-outs?
Both ends are 3/4 inch NPT female, so it lands on standard 3/4 inch male-threaded adapters or nipples at each side. The inlet is a union female thread, which means you can break the connection at that side to service or swap the valve without cutting pipe or spinning the whole body. If you are on copper, you will need male NPT sweat or press adapters at both ends; they are not included.
2) Do I still need a separate thermal expansion tank if I install this PRV ahead of a water heater?
The LF25AUB-Z3 has a built-in thermal expansion bypass, so pressure built by a heating water heater can relieve back through the valve toward the street instead of being trapped in the building piping. That is the feature that keeps a closed system from spiking. It does not replace an expansion tank where the local code or the heater manufacturer requires one, but it is the reason this model is specified on water heater feeds rather than a non-bypass PRV.
3) Is the Watts 9257 pressure reducing valve lead free and legal for potable water?
The body is a lead free copper silicon alloy, which is what Watts uses for potable water service in jurisdictions enforcing lead free requirements. It is sold for both commercial and residential potable use. The wetted trim is a polymer seat with an EPDM disc and a stainless steel strainer screen.
4) Does this Watts PRV come with a pressure gauge, and how do I set it without one?
No gauge is fitted on the 9257 version. To dial it in you put a gauge on a downstream hose bib or a test tee, open a fixture to establish flow, then turn the adjusting screw and read the result. The valve leaves the factory at 50 psi, so many installs go in as-is. If you want a factory gauge on the valve itself, order the gauge-equipped version of the LF25AUB series instead.
5) Is there a built-in strainer, or do I need to install a separate one upstream?
A stainless steel strainer is integral to the valve, so no separate inline strainer is needed to protect the seat from grit. Worth knowing for maintenance: on a well or a system with a lot of debris, that screen is the part you clean, and the union inlet connection is what lets you pull the valve to get at it without cutting the line.
6) Can I use this Watts reducing valve on a hot water line or a recirculation loop?
Yes, within temperature limits. The valve is rated to 180 F (82 C) maximum operating temperature, which covers domestic hot water and a tempered recirculation return. The low end is 33 F (0.5 C), so it must not be installed anywhere it can freeze, such as an unheated crawlspace or an exterior wall cavity without protection.
7) Can the Watts 9257 be installed outdoors or in a corrosive mechanical room?
There is no corrosion resistant coating on this valve. The lead free copper silicon alloy body handles normal potable water service indoors, but for a buried, exterior, or chemically aggressive setting you want a coated valve or a protected enclosure. The 33 F lower temperature limit rules out unprotected outdoor use in freezing climates on its own.
