Metallics JFWPB43 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver bit do I need for the Metallics JFWPB43 brass wood screws?
A #3 Phillips bit. The JFWPB43 uses a Phillips drive with a recess diameter of 0.270 to 0.283 in. and a recess width of 0.036 in., so a #2 bit will cam out and chew up the soft brass head. Brass is forgiving material, so drive it slow with the right bit seated fully.
2) Do these brass wood screws meet a dimensional standard for a submittal?
Yes. The JFWPB43 is made to ASME B18.6.1, with threads to ASME B18.6.1-1997, so head and thread geometry are to the standard inch wood screw spec and interchangeable with any other B18.6.1 #12 wood screw. One thing to flag for government work: these are not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple.
3) Why would I spec brass wood screws instead of steel or zinc plated?
Two reasons drive it: corrosion and conductivity. Brass does not rust and holds up in damp or exterior-adjacent work where plated steel streaks, and it is non-magnetic and non-sparking, which is why Metallics lists the JFWPB series for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work. The trade-off is strength, brass is softer than steel, so pilot drill hardwood and do not overtorque.
4) Do I need to drill a pilot hole for #12 brass wood screws?
Yes, in anything harder than soft pine. Brass is a soft fastener material and a #12 shank at 11 threads per inch displaces a lot of wood, so without a pilot the head will twist off or the Phillips recess will strip. Drill the pilot for the shank diameter in the top piece and slightly undersize in the receiving member.
