1) What size driver bit do I need for Metallics JFWP45 wood screws?
A #3 Phillips bit. The JFWP45 is a #12 diameter screw with a Phillips recess measuring 0.270 to 0.283 inch in diameter and 0.148 to 0.171 inch deep, which is why a #2 bit will cam out on it. Keep a #3 in the pouch if you are driving these all day.
2) How much of a 3-1/2 inch #12 wood screw is actually threaded?
On the JFWP45, thread runs roughly two thirds of the 3-1/2 inch length, leaving an unthreaded shank under the head. That shank is what pulls two pieces of wood tight instead of the thread jacking them apart, so bore a clearance hole in the top member and let the thread bite only the bottom one. Thread pitch is 11 threads per inch and the point is tapered.
3) Can I use zinc plated wood screws outdoors or in a damp location?
Zinc plated steel is a dry, indoor-rated finish. The JFWP45 is steel with a zinc plating, which handles interior framing, backboards and equipment mounting fine but will rust in exposed or wet locations and will corrode faster against treated lumber. For outdoors, pressure treated wood or any damp pit or vault, move to a stainless or hot dip galvanized wood screw instead.
4) Will these screws satisfy a Buy American or ARRA requirement on a federal job?
