Metallics RSB100 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do the Metallics RSB100 stove bolts come with nuts, or do I have to order those separately?
Nuts are included. Each 1/4-20 x 3/4 in. round head stove bolt in the RSB100 comes with a hex machine screw nut, which is the nut style made specifically to run on machine screw threads. Nothing else is needed to make up the joint besides a washer if your application calls for one.
2) Will a 3/4 in. stove bolt be long enough to go through a box knockout and a bracket?
The 1/4-20 x 3/4 in. length leaves usable thread once you subtract your stack. Round head, so the head sits proud on top of the material rather than sinking in: head height is 0.16 to 0.175 in. and head width 0.443 to 0.472 in. Figure roughly 3/4 in. of shank for your combined material thickness plus enough thread for the hex nut to fully engage. Thicker assemblies need a longer bolt.
3) Is this a coarse thread 1/4-20, and will it take standard 1/4-20 hardware from my shop?
Yes, 20 threads per inch, right hand, which is the standard 1/4-20 coarse pitch. Any 1/4-20 nut, washer or tapped hole in your stock will mate with it. Built to the ANSI B18.6.3 dimensional standard, so the head and drive geometry match the common machine screw spec rather than a proprietary profile.
4) Do Metallics RSB100 stove bolts meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
No. The RSB100 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your project carries a domestic sourcing clause, this part will not satisfy it and you need a domestically produced fastener.
5) What size screwdriver do I need for a 1/4-20 combo head stove bolt?
The RSB100 head takes two drives in one: a slot and a Phillips recess. The Phillips is a #4 driver size, and the recess measures 0.255 to 0.268 in. across at 0.147 in. deep. The slot runs 0.064 to 0.075 in. wide and 0.082 to 0.109 in. deep, so a standard flat tip in that range seats fully. Handy when you are in a panel and only have one of the two bits on you.
6) How strong are these stove bolts, and are they hard enough for a structural bracket?
Tensile strength is 60,000 psi minimum with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel. That is standard machine screw material, fine for mounting boxes, straps, brackets and equipment, but it is not a grade 5 or grade 8 bolt and should not be substituted where a structural or high strength bolt is specified.
7) Is zinc plated steel good enough for these bolts outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
The RSB100 is steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating handles indoor and normally dry conditions well, which covers most electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work. For sustained wet exposure, coastal air or corrosive environments, step up to stainless or hot dip galvanized hardware instead.
8) What is the difference between a stove bolt and a regular machine screw?
A stove bolt like the RSB100 is a machine screw sold as an assembly with its nut, meant to go through clear holes in two pieces of material and be tightened from the back. A plain machine screw is normally driven into a tapped hole or a threaded insert. If your mounting point is already tapped, you do not need the nut; if you are bolting through sheet metal, an enclosure wall or a bracket, the bolt and nut pair is what you want. Round head with combo slot and Phillips drive gives you a bearing surface on soft or oversized holes.
9) How are Metallics RSB100 stove bolts packaged and what is the minimum I can buy?
They sell in a 100 piece jar, and 100 is the order minimum. Package type is listed as clamshell, with the standard package described as a square plastic jar. Total packed weight is 1.96 lbs. Other sizes and quantities are available by request.
