Metallics JBSC1434 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 1/4-20 button head cap screw thread into a standard 1/4-20 nut or tapped hole?
Yes. The JBSC1434 is cut 20 threads per inch in the UN thread form to ANSI/ASME B1.1, which is the standard 1/4-20 UNC series, so it mates with any 1/4-20 nut, rivnut, strut channel nut, or tapped hole. Overall dimensions follow ASME B18.3-2012, the socket screw standard, so head clearance matches any other B18.3 button head of this size.
2) Can I use these alloy steel black button head screws for a structural or high-strength connection?
No. Metallics states these screws are not recommended for critical, high-strength applications. They are rated at 4430 lb minimum tensile with a Rockwell C39-44 hardness, which is fine for mounting boxes, straps, brackets, equipment covers and similar electrical, plumbing and HVAC work, but if a drawing calls out a structural bolt or a graded socket cap screw to a specific strength class, specify that part instead.
3) Do these Metallics cap screws qualify for a Buy American or ARRA funded job?
No. The JBSC1434 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant; country of origin is listed as multiple. If you are buying for a federally funded project with domestic sourcing requirements, this part will not satisfy them.
4) What size hex key do I need to drive the Metallics JBSC1434 button head cap screw?
It takes a hex (Allen) key, not a wrench on the outside of the head. The socket is 0.087 inch deep, so seat the key fully before applying torque; shallow engagement is how button head sockets get stripped. The head itself measures 0.419 to 0.437 inch across and 0.122 to 0.132 inch high, so it sits nearly flush against the work surface.
5) Are these screws coated for outdoor or damp use?
They are supplied plain. The black is the alloy steel finish itself, not a plating or a corrosion barrier, so these are intended for dry interior work. For wet locations, exterior runs, or anywhere washdown or condensation is a factor, use a plated or stainless fastener instead.
6) Do I have to buy a full jar of the JBSC1434, or can I get a handful?
These ship by the jar, with a 100 piece minimum. The jar weighs 1.32 lbs. Other sizes and quantities in the BSC socket button head line are available by request.
7) Should I use a button head socket screw or a standard socket cap screw for mounting equipment covers?
Button head is the choice when you want a low, rounded profile that nothing snags on and nothing has to be counterbored for. At 0.122 to 0.132 inch tall with a 0.419 to 0.437 inch head, the JBSC1434 sits much lower than a standard cylindrical socket cap screw of the same 1/4-20 size. The trade-off is strength and socket depth: a standard socket head cap screw takes more torque and more tension, so use that where the load is real. These are rated 4430 lb minimum tensile and are not for critical applications.
