Metallics JSHC1458SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will this 1/4-20 screw thread into a standard 1/4-20 coarse tapped hole or nut?
Yes. It's a UNC (coarse) thread at 20 threads per inch on a 1/4 inch nominal diameter, so it mates with any standard 1/4-20 nut, strut channel nut, or tapped 1/4-20 hole. Fine-thread 1/4-28 hardware will not accept it.
2) What counterbore diameter and depth do I need for this socket head cap screw?
Size the counterbore off the head: the head measures 0.365 to 0.375 in. across and 0.244 to 0.25 in. high. A counterbore slightly over 0.375 in. diameter and at least 1/4 in. deep will bring the head flush. Head geometry conforms to ASME B18.3-2012, so standard 1/4 in. socket head counterbore charts apply.
3) Is 18-8 stainless OK for outdoor or damp electrical work?
18-8 stainless is the usual choice for exterior and wet-location electrical mounting because it won't rust-bleed the way plated carbon steel does. The screw is 18-8 stainless throughout, not a coating, so cut threads and wrench marks don't create a corrosion start point. For chloride-heavy coastal or pool environments, 316 stainless is the step up.
4) How strong is a stainless socket head cap screw compared with an alloy steel one?
This one is rated 80,000 psi minimum tensile and 30,000 psi minimum yield, at Rockwell B80 hardness. That is well below a black alloy-steel socket head cap screw, which is heat treated to a much higher grade. Where the load is structural, spec alloy; where you need corrosion resistance and the load is moderate, this is the right trade.
5) Is the JSHC1458SS sold individually or do I have to buy a box?
It ships as a jar of 100, and 100 count is the order minimum. If you need a different length, diameter, or count, other sizes and quantities are available by request.
6) Do these 1/4-20 stainless cap screws meet Buy American requirements on a federal or publicly funded job?
Metallics lists the JSHC1458SS as both ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant, which is the pair of flags most government, school, and federally funded institutional specs ask for on fasteners. Country of origin is listed as multiple.
7) Is a 5/8 inch long cap screw long enough for my application?
At 5/8 in. under the head on a 1/4 in. diameter, grip length is short, so it suits thin plate, sheet metal brackets, device mounting, and tapped bosses rather than thick stacked material. A practical check: you want at least one diameter (1/4 in.) of thread engaged in the tapped part after the material thickness is taken up.
8) How does this screw hold up at elevated temperature inside an enclosure or near a ballast?
18-8 stainless keeps its mechanical and performance properties above ambient temperature, which is why it gets specified for fasteners inside heat-producing enclosures and luminaire housings where plated carbon steel relaxes or seizes.
