ASC Engineered Solutions 310069208 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Are all four openings on the 1/8 inch black malleable iron cross the same size?
All four outlets are 1/8 inch with female pipe threads, so it's a straight (equal) cross, not a reducing one. Any 1/8 inch male NPT pipe nipple or fitting threads into any of the four ports.
2) Is a black malleable iron cross OK for potable water lines?
No. Black malleable iron is for non-potable service, typically natural gas, air, fuel oil, hydronic heating and fire protection piping. For potable water you want galvanized malleable iron, brass, or copper instead. Black iron rusts in wet water service and is not lead-free certified for drinking water.
3) Standard or extra heavy pattern? I need to match the class on my drawing.
This is the standard (STD) pattern malleable iron cross, rated to ASME B16.3 for the standard class, not the extra heavy 300 lb pattern. If the spec calls out Class 300 extra heavy, this is the wrong fitting.
4) Do I need sealant on the threads, or does this cross seal on its own?
Tapered NPT threads to ASME B1.20.1 need a thread sealant or PTFE tape to seal; the metal-to-metal taper alone is not a reliable seal. On gas service use a sealant rated for the gas. Nothing is supplied with the fitting, so sealant is a separate line item.
5) What grade of iron is this fitting cast from?
It's malleable iron to ASTM A-197, the specification for cupola malleable iron castings used in threaded pipe fittings. That is the material callout most mechanical specs reference for black iron crosses.
6) What is the ASC part number and shipping weight on the 1/8 inch black cross?
Order it as ASC Engineered Solutions model 310069208. Each fitting weighs 0.12 lbs, so a carton of them adds almost nothing to a mixed order of pipe fittings.
