Watts 831015 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How does the Watts 152A steam pressure regulator connect to 2 inch pipe?
Both ends of the Watts 0831015 are 2 inch female NPT threaded, inlet and outlet the same size. So it threads directly onto 2 inch male NPT nipples or close nipples off your steam main. No flange kit, no union is supplied with it, so plan on two nipples plus unions if you want to be able to pull the regulator later without cutting pipe.
2) What downstream steam pressure can the Watts 0831015 be set to?
The reduced pressure range is adjustable from 30 to 100 psi, so it covers typical medium pressure process and kitchen equipment supply. If your equipment needs a low pressure setpoint under 30 psi, this spring range will not get you there and you need a different reduced pressure range in the 152A series.
3) What inlet pressure can this Watts steam regulator handle?
Maximum working pressure on the 152A iron regulator is 200 psi (14 bar). That is the ceiling for the valve body, not the setpoint, so an inlet main running up to 200 psi is within the valve's rating while the outlet is set somewhere between 30 and 100 psi.
4) Does the Watts 0831015 come with a strainer and pressure gauge, or do I need to buy those separately?
Neither is included. The 0831015 is supplied with no gauge and no integral strainer, so for a process steam install you add a separate Y strainer upstream to protect the stainless steel seat and disc, plus a gauge on the reduced side so you can actually set the regulator. Budget those two items into the job.
5) Is the Watts 152A regulator suitable for potable water service?
No. The 0831015 is a process steam pressure regulator with an iron body and no corrosion resistant coating, built for commercial and industrial steam service. For domestic water pressure reduction you want a bronze or lead free water pressure reducing valve instead, not this one.
6) Can this regulator be installed in an unheated mechanical room or outdoors?
Minimum temperature for the 152A is 33 degrees F (0.5 C), so it must stay above freezing. With an iron body and no corrosion resistant coating, outdoor or wash down locations are a poor choice; keep it indoors in a conditioned or at least freeze protected space.
7) Does the Watts 0831015 have a thermal expansion bypass?
No bypass. The 0831015 is a standard valve style steam regulator with no thermal expansion bypass, so it is not intended to relieve downstream expansion pressure back to the inlet. On a closed system where downstream pressure can build, provide a separate relief valve sized for the equipment.
8) What are the internals made of on this Watts steam regulator?
Trim and disc are both stainless steel, which is what holds up to steam cutting and wet steam at the seat. The body itself is iron. The strainer material called out for the series is stainless steel as well, though no strainer ships with the 0831015.
