ASC Engineered Solutions 310011002 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the ASC 2-1/2 x 2 inch black malleable iron 90 degree elbow threaded on both ends?
Both openings are female pipe thread (FPT), one at 2-1/2 inch and one at 2 inch, cut to ASME B1.20.1 NPT. It threads directly onto male-threaded black steel pipe nipples at both ends, so you don't need adapters as long as your pipe ends are male NPT.
2) Does this ASC 90 degree elbow reduce from 2-1/2 inch down to 2 inch?
Yes, it's a reducing ell. The run side takes 2-1/2 inch pipe and the outlet takes 2 inch, so you get the turn and the size change in one fitting instead of stacking an elbow and a bushing.
3) Is this black malleable iron elbow UL listed and FM approved for a fire sprinkler system?
It carries UL/FM recognition, so it can be used on fire protection piping where the AHJ requires listed and approved fittings. It's standard weight malleable iron to ASTM A-197 with pressure ratings per ASME B16.3.
4) Can I use a black malleable iron elbow on a domestic water line?
No. Black malleable iron is for non-potable service: fire sprinkler, natural gas, compressed air, and steam or hydronic lines. Black fittings corrode in potable water, and potable systems generally require lead-free certified fittings. For water service, use galvanized, copper, or brass instead.
5) Is this a standard weight or extra heavy fitting?
Standard weight (STD), dimensioned and pressure rated to ASME B16.3 Class 150 practice for malleable iron threaded fittings. If your spec calls for extra heavy or Class 300, this is not the right fitting.
6) Will this ASC reducing elbow match the takeout dimensions on my piping drawing?
It's built to ASME B16.3, which fixes center-to-face dimensions for malleable iron threaded fittings, so it will lay out the same as any other B16.3 standard weight 2-1/2 x 2 ell regardless of who made it. Threads follow ASME B1.20.1 NPT.
7) Do I need thread sealant with this malleable iron elbow?
Yes, the joint is made by the sealant, not the metal. NPT tapered threads per ASME B1.20.1 need pipe dope or PTFE tape rated for your service, and on gas lines that means a sealant approved for gas. Sealant is not supplied with the fitting.
