ASC Engineered Solutions 310090006 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the ASC 2-1/2 x 2 black malleable iron reducer have female threads on both ends?
Both ends are FPT, so this is a female-by-female bell reducer. The large end takes 2-1/2 inch male pipe thread and the small end takes 2 inch. Threads are cut to ASME B1.20.1 (NPT), so it mates with standard threaded black pipe nipples and fittings. If you need a male-by-female step-down instead, you want a bushing, not a reducing coupling.
2) Will a black malleable iron reducer work on a domestic water line?
No. Black malleable iron is for gas, fire protection, and similar dry or treated-water service. On potable water it corrodes and it isn't a lead-free certified material. For domestic water use copper, PEX, CPVC, or a certified brass or stainless fitting. Galvanized malleable would be the equivalent fitting for non-potable wet service.
3) Is this reducer standard or extra heavy pattern?
Standard pattern (STD), which in malleable iron to ASME B16.3 is the Class 150 fitting. If your drawing calls out Class 300 extra heavy malleable iron, this one does not meet it and you need the 300 pattern fitting instead.
4) Is a 2-1/2 x 2 reducing coupling the right fitting, or should I use a bushing?
A reducing coupling like this one is female on both ends, so it drops between two lengths of pipe or nipples and steps 2-1/2 inch down to 2 inch. A bushing is male on the large side and threads into the port of another fitting, which is what you want when you're reducing straight out of a tee or valve without adding length. Couplings also keep more of the flow area than a bushing crammed into a fitting port.
5) Will this reducer thread onto pipe from another manufacturer?
Yes. The threads follow ASME B1.20.1 and the fitting is dimensioned to ASME B16.3, both of which are the standards every domestic malleable iron fitting and threaded steel pipe is cut to. It interchanges with any other manufacturer's Class 150 malleable iron fittings and standard threaded pipe of the same sizes.
6) How much does the 2-1/2 x 2 black reducer weigh?
2.51 lbs each. Worth knowing if you're hanging a run of them, since that mass sits on the pipe support along with the water-filled pipe, and if you're ordering by the case for a large job.
