Blackburn ASP250 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Blackburn ASP250 to splice copper, or is it aluminum only?
The sleeve body is aluminum with a tin plated surface, which is the standard dual-rated construction for splicing aluminum to aluminum or aluminum to copper. The tin plating is what keeps the aluminum barrel from reacting directly against copper strand.
2) Is the ASP250 rated for medium voltage feeder cable?
Yes. The Blackburn ASP250 carries a 35 kV voltage rating, so it can be used in medium voltage splices up to that class as well as in 600 V service and feeder work. It is UL listed under file E9809.
3) Will a 250 kcmil splice sleeve work on 4/0 or 350 kcmil cable?
No. Compression sleeves are size specific, and the ASP250 is built for 250 kcmil. A smaller conductor such as 4/0 will not fill the barrel enough for a sound crimp, and 350 kcmil will not enter it. Order the sleeve matched to the actual conductor size at the splice.
4) What does the red color on the Blackburn splice sleeve mean?
Red is the color code marking on the ASP250 barrel, used to tell the installer which compression die and die index to set up for the crimp. Match the tool die to the red code rather than guessing off the conductor size, and confirm the die chart on your crimping head covers this color.
5) Does the ASP250 splice sleeve come insulated or do I have to cover it myself?
It is a bare compression sleeve, not a pre-insulated connector. After crimping you cover it yourself, normally with heat shrink, a cold shrink tube, or a taped buildup appropriate to the system voltage. That applies whether you are at 600 V or up toward its 35 kV rating.
6) Should I use a compression splice like the ASP250 or a bolted split bolt connector?
A compression sleeve is the choice where the splice has to be submersible, direct buried, pulled back into a raceway, or taped over smoothly, because the finished crimp is a compact barrel with no protruding hardware. A bolted or mechanical connector is easier where you have no crimping tool on site or expect to open the joint again later. The ASP250 needs a hydraulic or battery crimper with the correct die, so plan the tooling before you order.
7) How is the Blackburn ASP250 sold, individually or in a bag?
Each. One ASP250 sleeve per unit, so order one per splice point and count both ends of every conductor run in the pull. The part is made in Mexico.
