Blackburn ASP300 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What conductor size does the Blackburn ASP300 splice sleeve take?
The ASP300 is sized for 300 kcmil conductor, which is what the 300 in the model number refers to. It's a compression splice, so the conductor is crimped in rather than set with screws, and the blue color band is the die/size identifier on Blackburn compression connectors.
2) Can I use an aluminum splice sleeve on copper conductor, or is it aluminum only?
The ASP300 body is aluminum with a tin-plated surface. Tin plating over aluminum is what makes a compression splice suitable for aluminum-to-aluminum and aluminum-to-copper work, because the plating keeps the dissimilar metals from contacting directly. Check the connector body marking for the AL/CU designation before you crimp a copper run into it.
3) Is the Blackburn ASP300 splice insulated, and do I need to tape or sleeve it after crimping?
No insulation on it. The ASP300 is a bare metal sleeve, so on any live circuit you have to rebuild the insulation yourself with tape, heat shrink, or a cold shrink tube rated for the system voltage. That's normal for a compression splice of this class, and it's why it works in both direct-bury/enclosure and cable-splice kit applications.
4) What voltage can a Blackburn ASP300 splice sleeve be used on?
It carries a 35 kV rating, so it covers 600 V secondary work all the way up through 15 kV, 25 kV, and 35 kV medium-voltage cable splices. The rating is on the connector itself; the finished splice is only good to the rating of the insulation system you build over it.
5) Is the ASP300 UL listed for inspection purposes?
Blackburn lists the ASP300 under UL file E9809, which is the reference an inspector or submittal reviewer will want on a medium-voltage compression splice. Cite the file number along with the 35 kV rating on your submittal.
6) Should I use a compression splice sleeve or a set-screw/mechanical connector for a 300 kcmil feeder?
A compression sleeve like the ASP300 needs a hydraulic or battery crimper and the matching die, and once it's crimped it is permanent, which is what you want in a direct-bury, manhole, or medium-voltage splice where you can't get back to retorque a screw. Its 35 kV rating suits medium-voltage cable. A mechanical set-screw connector installs with just a hex key and can be taken apart, which is the better call inside an accessible enclosure or when you don't have crimp tooling on the truck.
7) Is the Blackburn ASP300 a long-barrel splice, and does that matter for the number of crimps?
It's a 4 inch sleeve, which gives you barrel length on each side of the joint for multiple crimps per conductor rather than a single crimp. Follow the crimp count and die index stamped on the barrel, and keep the 4 inch overall length in mind when you lay out the splice window, since your rebuilt insulation has to cover the whole sleeve plus overlap onto the cable jacket.
8) Where is the Blackburn ASP300 made? I need country of origin for a government job.
Country of origin is Mexico. For federal or state procurement with domestic-content language, that's the value to put on your certification paperwork, along with the UL E9809 file reference.
