Viega 26120 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Viega 26120 MegaPress elbow work on 1-1/2 inch black iron pipe?
Yes. The 26120 is a carbon steel MegaPress fitting sized 1-1/2 inch by 1-1/2 inch, so the press end goes onto 1-1/2 inch carbon steel pipe such as black iron. Carbon steel fittings are matched to carbon steel pipe, not to copper or stainless lines.
2) Do I need to cut threads or weld to install the Viega 26120?
No. It is a press fitting, so the joint is made cold with a press tool and jaw sized for 1-1/2 inch MegaPress. No threading, no flame, no welding. The press end also uses Viega's Smart Connect feature, which is there so an unpressed connection shows itself during pressure testing rather than staying hidden in the wall.
3) Can I use the Viega 26120 carbon steel elbow on a potable water line?
Carbon steel MegaPress is a black iron pipe system, used on gas, hydronic heating, compressed air, fire protection and similar closed or non-potable services. For potable water you want a copper or stainless press system rather than this carbon steel fitting, since bare carbon steel is not the material you run drinking water through.
4) How much room do I need to fit a 1-1/2 inch MegaPress 45 degree street elbow in a tight chase?
Plan on an overall envelope of 5.795 x 4.024 x 2.437 inches for the fitting itself, and add clearance for the press jaw to swing around the socket. In a crowded riser or chase, measure the jaw sweep as well as the fitting, since the press tool needs more space than the elbow does.
5) Should I use a 45 degree elbow or a 90 for an offset around an obstruction?
Two 45s give you a gentler offset with less pressure drop than a pair of 90s, which is why they are the usual pick for jogging a run around a beam or duct. The 26120 is the 45 in street configuration, so the FTG end plugs straight into the next fitting and you save a coupling. If you need a hard change of direction at a wall or corner, use a 90 instead.
6) Is the sealing element in a MegaPress carbon steel fitting suitable for gas, or do I need a different seal?
Standard MegaPress carbon steel fittings ship with a seal intended for water, hydronic and air service. Gas service uses a separate MegaPressG line with a yellow HNBR sealing element. If the job is fuel gas, order the G version rather than the 26120.
