Viega 26550 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is Smart Connect on the Viega MegaPress 26550 and why does it matter on an inspection?
Smart Connect is Viega's unpressed-connection feature: a joint left unpressed will leak during pressure test so it gets found on the bench instead of inside a finished wall. On a 3 inch carbon steel run with a lot of joints, that is the point of it. The feature does not replace pressing, it only flags the one you missed.
2) Should I use a 45 degree street elbow or a standard 45 on a 3 inch steel press run?
Use the street version, like the Viega 26550, when the turn starts at another fitting: the FTG end slides straight into that fitting's press socket, so you save a nipple and one press joint. Use a standard 45 with two press sockets when you are joining two cut lengths of 3 inch pipe. Fewer joints is fewer leak paths and less tool time.
