Viega 26685 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pipe does the Viega MegaPress 26685 coupling join?
The Viega 26685 MegaPress coupling is a 2-1/2 inch by 2-1/2 inch fitting, so it joins two runs of 2-1/2 inch carbon steel pipe. Both ends are press connections (P1 x P2), no threading or welding at the joint.
2) What does the "no stop" mean on the Viega 26685 MegaPress coupling?
No stop means there is no internal shoulder in the middle of the coupling, so the pipe can slide all the way through. That is what you want for a repair or a tie-in where you cannot pull the pipe apart to get a fitting over the end: slide the coupling along, line it up on the joint, and press both sides. A stop coupling, by contrast, fixes the insertion depth on each end and is the one to use on new runs where you can set the pipe into it.
3) Can I use the Viega 26685 on black iron gas pipe or is it water only?
It is a carbon steel press coupling sized for 2-1/2 inch carbon steel (black) pipe, which is the MegaPress family's purpose. Confirm the specific application rating for your system with the MegaPress submittal for your trade, since gas work uses the MegaPressG series with its own sealing element.
4) What is Smart Connect on this Viega press coupling and why does it matter on the job?
Smart Connect is a feature of the sealing element that intentionally leaks a small amount when the connection has not been pressed. On a 2-1/2 inch carbon steel run with dozens of joints, that is how you catch the one you missed at pressure test instead of after the ceiling closes up.
5) How much room do I need around the pipe to press a 2-1/2 inch MegaPress coupling?
The fitting body itself measures 4.921 inches long and 3.543 inches across, so plan clearance for that plus the jaw or press ring and actuator swing. In tight chases or close to a wall, check the press tool's required working envelope before you commit to pressing in place.
6) Is the Viega 26685 pressed with jaws or does 2-1/2 inch need a press ring?
At 2-1/2 inch you are in the large-diameter range, which is pressed with a MegaPress XL press ring and actuator rather than a standard jaw. The coupling is sold as the fitting only, so the tooling, ring and actuator are separate items you need on the truck.
