Viega 28795 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Viega MegaPressG 28795 a press-to-press fitting on both ends?
Both ends of the 28795 MegaPressG coupling are press connections, listed as P1 x P2, in the 4 inch by 4 inch size. There are no threads to cut and no grooves to roll, so you press it onto prepared 4 inch carbon steel pipe at each end.
2) What does "no stop" mean on this 4 inch MegaPressG coupling, and when would I use it over a standard coupling?
A no-stop coupling has no internal pipe stop, so the body can slide along the pipe before you press. That is what you want for a repair or a tie-in on an existing fixed run where you cannot pull the pipe apart to seat it against a shoulder. On a new run where both pipe ends are free, a coupling with a stop is easier to center. The 28795 is the 4 inch by 4 inch no-stop version.
3) Will the Viega 28795 coupling work on gas lines, or is it for water?
MegaPressG is Viega's gas-rated press system for black iron and carbon steel pipe, which is what the G suffix denotes. The 28795 is the carbon steel 4 inch by 4 inch coupling in that system. Use the plain MegaPress line, not MegaPressG, for non-gas service.
4) What is Smart Connect on the Viega MegaPressG coupling and why does it matter on a gas job?
Smart Connect is the feature built into the sealing element that intentionally leaks a small amount under test pressure if the joint has not been pressed. On a 4 inch gas main with dozens of joints, that is how you find the one the crew missed during pressure testing instead of after the wall closes. It is included on the 28795 coupling.
5) Is the Viega 28795 carbon steel or stainless, and can I use it on galvanized pipe?
Carbon steel is the body material on the 28795. That matches it to black iron and carbon steel pipe runs. Stainless MegaPress fittings are a separate line for stainless and other systems, so match the fitting material to the pipe you are joining.
6) What part number do I order for the Viega 4 inch MegaPressG no-stop coupling?
Order Viega 28795. That is the manufacturer part number for the 4 inch by 4 inch carbon steel MegaPressG no-stop coupling with Smart Connect.
7) Where is the Viega 28795 MegaPressG coupling made?
Germany. That is the stated country of origin for the 28795, which matters on institutional and government jobs with origin documentation requirements in the submittal package.
