Metallics RT34BLK – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is rubber tape the right choice for insulating a splice, or should I use vinyl electrical tape?
Rubber tape like the Metallics RT34BLK is the layer that builds insulation back onto a splice. It is applied stretched and half-lapped so it fuses to itself and seals out moisture, then it is normally overwrapped with a vinyl electrical tape for mechanical and abrasion protection. Vinyl tape on its own is fine for identification, color coding, and jacketing, but it does not fuse or seal the way rubber tape does.
2) What trades use 3/4 inch black rubber tape like the Metallics RT34BLK?
It is an electrical department item, stocked by electrical contractors, maintenance electricians, and MRO crews for insulating and moisture-sealing conductor splices and terminations. The 3/4 inch width is the common size for building wire splices and motor lead work.
