Metallics FT34BLK – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is friction tape the same thing as vinyl electrical tape?
No. Friction tape like the Metallics FT34BLK is a cloth based tape used for mechanical protection and abrasion resistance over a splice, or as padding and build-up on irregular shapes. Vinyl electrical tape is the stretchable plastic tape used for primary insulation and color coding. On many splices electricians use both: vinyl for the insulating layer, then friction tape over it for abrasion protection.
2) What part number do I order for black 3/4 inch friction tape from Metallics?
Order Metallics FT34BLK. That one part number covers the 3/4 inch by 60 foot black roll, and it is the only configuration offered, so there is no width or color option to specify on the order.
3) Is this an electrical trade item or a general purpose tape?
Metallics catalogs the FT34BLK as electrical department material, and friction tape is an electrician's consumable: splice protection, abrasion resistance over taped joints, and build-up on cable. MRO and maintenance crews also keep it on hand for harness wrapping and padding, but it is bought as electrical supply, not as a general packaging tape.
