Mustee 748-34WHT – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I install the Mustee DURAWALL wall kit over existing tile or drywall?
No. The 748-34WHT is a direct-to-stud wall, meaning the studs get stripped to bare framing and the panels fasten to them. Installing over existing tile or drywall throws off the panel depth and the flange relationship to the base. If you need a surface-applied panel that goes over a sound existing wall, a direct-to-stud kit is not the product for that job.
2) Is the Mustee 748 DURAWALL a one piece unit or does it come apart for a remodel?
Three pieces, which is the whole point for a retrofit. A one piece surround will not turn a hallway corner or clear a door opening in an occupied unit; these panels go in through a standard doorway and assemble in the alcove. For property managers replacing a tub or shower in a finished building, that is usually what decides between a 3-piece and a one piece unit.
3) Does the Mustee 748-34WHT come with a shower base, or is that ordered separately?
Walls only. The 748-34WHT is the three-piece DURAWALL panel set for a 34 x 48 alcove; the receptor, the drain and the valve trim are separate line items. Specify the base first, then match the wall kit to its footprint, because the base sets the dimension the panels have to land on.
4) Does the Mustee 34 x 48 DURAWALL shower wall include shelves, or do I need to add a corner caddy?
Three shelves are molded into the panels, so there is nothing extra to buy and nothing to silicone into a corner later. Molded shelving matters in rental and institutional showers because a stick-on caddy is the first thing that fails and the first thing a tenant calls about.
5) What are Mustee DURAWALL shower walls made of, and how do they hold up in a rental or commercial shower?
Fiberglass. It is a molded, non-porous surface with no grout joints across the field of the panel, which is why it turns up in apartments, dorms and hospitality far more than tile: nothing to regrout, and cleaning is a wipe rather than a scrub. The shelves are formed in the same molding rather than fastened on.
6) What color does the Mustee 748-34WHT DURAWALL come in?
White, and that is the only finish on the 748-34WHT. If you are standardizing a building, white is the safe call for matching fixtures across openings and it keeps replacement panels years from now consistent with what is already installed.
