ASC Engineered Solutions 310507603 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the ASC 3/8 inch black malleable iron 90 degree street elbow female on one end and male on the other?
Yes. The 3/8 inch street ell has one FPT (female) end and one MPT (male) end, both 3/8 inch. That's what makes it a street fitting: you thread the male end directly into the female port of a valve, another fitting, or equipment, and take pipe into the female side. A standard 90 elbow has two female ends and would need a nipple to do the same job.
2) Is this ASC 3/8 elbow UL Listed and FM Approved for fire sprinkler work?
Yes, the fitting carries UL/FM recognition, which is what a sprinkler contractor needs for fittings going into a listed fire protection system. It's black malleable iron, the usual choice for wet pipe sprinkler and gas service rather than potable water.
3) Can I use a black malleable iron 90 elbow on a potable water line?
No. Black malleable iron is uncoated and will rust in potable water service. Use it on black iron gas piping, fire sprinkler, or compressed air and similar closed systems. For water, go to a galvanized malleable iron fitting or a copper or brass fitting instead.
4) How much does a 3/8 inch XH black street elbow weigh for takeoff purposes?
Each one is 0.26 lbs. Handy if you're pricing freight on a bulk fitting order or calculating hanger loads on a small-bore run.
