It's a 75 ohm adapter, rated for 75 ohm applications up to 3GHz, which is what CCTV and video coax runs use. Putting a 50 ohm adapter in a 75 ohm video path is the usual cause of impedance mismatch and picture degradation, so match the impedance to the cable. For 50 ohm RF or instrumentation work, this is the wrong part.

That's exactly what it does. The 85-075 is a female-to-female splice that accepts a male BNC connector on each side, so you push two existing patch or camera leads together and you have one continuous run. No tools, no crimping, and the connection is reusable if you need to break it apart later.

Both ends are female BNC. It mates with a male BNC connector on either side, so it joins two cables that are already terminated male. If you need to adapt a female cable end to a female jack, a barrel like this will not do it, you need a male-to-male coupler instead.

The 85-075 is rated to 3GHz at 75 ohm, which covers 3G-SDI class video bandwidth, so a barrel splice is electrically acceptable rather than a stopgap. Re-terminating a single continuous cable is still the cleaner mechanical answer in a permanent pull, but where you're linking two finished leads, this is a rated connection and it comes apart again without cutting anything.

The body is nickel plated brass with a gold plated round center pin contact. The nickel plating on brass resists corrosion and the gold center pin keeps contact resistance low over repeated mating cycles, which matters on a splice that gets disconnected and reconnected during service calls.
