3M 8426-11 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need a torch or heat gun to install the 8426-11?
No. This is a cold shrink tube, not heat shrink. It comes pre-expanded on a removable core, and you pull the core ribbon out to let the EPDM rubber contract onto the cable. No flame, no heat gun, no tools, which is why it gets specified in vaults, manholes and other spaces where open flame is a problem.
2) Can I use the 8426-11 on shielded cable?
Yes, for insulation, mechanical protection and repair work it's listed for use over non-shielded, tape shield, UniShield and wire shield cable constructions. The cable type it's designed around is non-shielded solid dielectric power cable, and its 1 kV rating means shielded medium voltage splices still need a proper MV splice kit; the 8426-11 is the jacket-level insulator and protector, not the MV splice body.
3) Can the 8426-11 cold shrink insulator be installed outdoors in cold weather?
Its operating range runs from -40 C (-40 F) up to 90 C (194 F), so it holds up in winter installs and at normal power cable conductor operating temperatures. The EPDM rubber contains no chlorides or sulfur, which is what keeps it from attacking the cable insulation or connector over time.

Beyond insulating a splice, it's used to seal terminal lug barrels, conduit couplings, and conduit-to-cable breakouts, and for general mechanical protection and cable repair.
