3M Scotch 364-Y-3X1000FT Buried Electric Line Caution Tape, Yellow

The 3M Scotch 364-Y-3X1000FT Buried Barricade Tape is a high-visibility yellow warning tape designed to mark the presence of underground electrical infrastructure before excavation or trenching begins. Printed with the bold message "CAUTION BURIED ELECTRIC LINE BELOW," each roll measures 3in x 1000 ft and ships 8 rolls per case, making it a practical bulk solution for utility contractors, electricians, and excavation crews who need to flag buried electric lines across long trench runs. Deployed above buried conduit or cable, this tape gives ground crews an early, unmistakable warning before digging equipment reaches live electrical lines.

3M 364-Y-3X1000FT – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the 3M Scotch 364 yellow tape actually say printed on it?
The Scotch 364-Y tape is printed with a repeating "CAUTION BURIED ELECTRIC LINE BELOW" message in bold text on bright yellow. It is a buried-line warning tape, not a generic barricade or crowd-control tape, so the message is specific to underground electrical conduit and cable. If you need to flag buried gas, water, or communications lines, this printed legend is wrong for that use and you want tape printed for that utility instead.
2) How much tape do I get per roll and per case of 3M 364-Y-3X1000FT?
Each roll is 3 inches wide by 1000 feet long, and it ships 8 rolls to a case, so a full case covers 8000 linear feet of trench. For a crew laying tape over one continuous conduit run, that is enough for roughly a mile and a half of trench off a single case with no resupply.
3) Is this buried tape meant to go in the trench or across the opening as barrier tape?
It goes in the ground. The 364 buried tape is laid in the trench above the conduit or cable before backfill, so a future excavation crew hits the yellow warning layer before the digging equipment reaches live electrical. It is not intended as above-ground perimeter or barrier tape strung between stakes.
4) What is the exact part number to order the 3-inch by 1000-foot yellow 3M buried electric tape?
Order 3M part number 364-Y-3X1000FT. That designation breaks down as Scotch 364 series, Y for yellow, and the 3 inch by 1000 foot roll size. It is sold in the 8-roll case format.
5) Why yellow tape for an electric line instead of red?
The 364-Y is supplied in bright yellow, which reads clearly against soil and backfill and is what makes the warning register at a glance when a bucket first exposes it. The printed "CAUTION BURIED ELECTRIC LINE BELOW" legend is what identifies the utility, so the color and the text work together. Only the yellow version of this roll size is offered under 364-Y-3X1000FT.
6) Is a case of 3M 364 buried tape practical for a utility contractor stocking multiple job sites?
That is what the 8-roll case format is for. With 1000 feet on each roll, a single case can be split across several trenching crews or sites without anyone running short mid-run, which is the usual reason a crew stops to swap rolls. Utility contractors, electricians, and excavation crews are the intended users.
