The red Scotchlok 905 takes 18 to 14 AWG on the run conductor and 22 to 18 AWG on the tap. Insulation outer diameter is the other half of the fit: the run wire can be up to 0.145 in (3.7 mm) over the insulation, the tap wire up to 0.11 in (2.79 mm). If your wire is heavily jacketed it may exceed those numbers even at the right gauge.
2) Do I have to strip the wires before using a Scotchlok 905 tap connector?
No stripping. The 905 is an insulation displacement connector, so the metal element cuts through the insulation as the cap is closed and makes contact with the conductor. You lay the wires in and crush the cap shut with the tool.
3) What tool do I use to close a 3M Scotchlok 905 connector?
3M calls for the E-9BM crimping tool or a 9 inch lineman's pliers. Pliers work fine on small quantities; if you're closing hundreds of these on a fixture line, the E-9BM gives consistent seating pressure. Don't close them by hand, a partly seated cap will not displace the insulation fully.
