1) Will a 4-40 x 1 inch machine screw work for mounting a device or switch in an electrical box?
4-40 is not the standard device-mounting thread. Standard wiring devices, switches, receptacles and cover plates in US boxes use 6-32 threads, so a 4-40 screw will not thread into a device yoke or box ear. The Metallics JSRM03 is a 4-40 thread, 40 threads per inch, 1 inch long round head slotted screw in 18-8 stainless, used for small fixture, nameplate and component assembly work where a 4-40 tapped hole or nut is already in place.
