Spears SPR4020 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is this a replacement swab or does cement come with it?
Swabs only, no cement. The Spears 4020 is a replacement applicator for MT-648 cans, supplied 24 per pack. You order the cement separately.
2) Can I use the Spears 4020 swab with CPVC or ABS solvent cement?
It's sold as a PVC cement applicator swab, matched to MT-648 cans for solvent-weld work on PVC pipe and fittings. Nothing in the Spears spec extends it to other cement types, so treat it as a PVC solvent-cement applicator and keep a separate swab for other systems to avoid cross-contaminating cans.
3) How many swabs come in a pack of the Spears 4020 applicator?
Packed 24 each. That's a case quantity aimed at crews doing repeated solvent-weld work, so a single order covers a rough-in without reordering mid-job.
4) What is the difference between a large-mouth swab and a standard cement dauber?
The large-mouth head is wider, so it lays cement across more of the pipe OD and fitting socket per pass. That's what you want on bigger diameter PVC where a small dauber leaves thin or missed spots. On small diameter pipe a narrow dauber gives you more control and less squeeze-out. The Spears 4020 is the wide-head version, 4 inches in length.
5) What is the Spears part number for the large-mouth cement swab?
Model 4020 from Spears, the large-mouth PVC cement applicator swab for MT-648 cans. That's the number to quote when a distributor asks which swab you need, since Spears carries more than one applicator size.
6) Is this swab suitable for irrigation and sprinkler PVC work, not just plumbing?
Yes. Spears lists irrigation and sprinkler system assembly alongside residential and commercial plumbing, new construction rough-in, repair work, and general MRO tasks. Any PVC solvent-weld joint made from an MT-648 can is in scope.
