Spears AB1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size is the Spears AB1 acid brush head, and what pipe sizes is it practical for?
The Spears AB1 acid brush has a 1/2 inch brush head. That width is meant for controlled application of primer and cement onto pipe and fitting surfaces, so it suits small and mid diameter solvent weld work where you want coverage inside the fitting socket without flooding the joint. On large diameter pipe you'll want a wider dauber or swab to cover the surface in the working time of the cement.
2) Can I use the same acid brush for both PVC primer and solvent cement?
Better not to. The Spears AB1 is a disposable applicator, and the reason it's sold in bulk is so you can use a separate brush for primer and for cement and avoid cross contamination between the two containers. Dipping a primer wet brush into a cement can contaminates the cement.
3) How many Spears AB1 acid brushes come in a case?
The AB1 acid brush ships 144 per case. That's bulk packaging aimed at contractors and distributors who burn through brushes on high volume solvent weld work and don't want to run short mid job.
4) Is an acid brush the right applicator, or should I use the dauber in the cement can lid?
The dauber attached to the can lid is sized to the can, not to your pipe, and it goes back into the cement after touching primer. A separate 1/2 inch acid brush like the Spears AB1 lets you keep primer and cement application separate and gives you a narrower head for working inside a fitting socket. For large diameter pipe, neither one is enough and you move to a full size swab or roller.
5) What is the Spears part number for this acid brush?
The applicator brush is Spears model AB1. That's the number to quote when reordering brushes for bulk cement and primer stocking.
6) Is this brush reusable between jobs, or do I throw it out?
Throw it out. The Spears acid brush is built as a single use or short term applicator, which is why it comes 144 to a case. Cement hardens in the bristles once it sets, and a stiff brush lays down an uneven film that can leave a dry spot in the joint.
