OATEY 30246 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use Oatey 30246 PVC cement on a potable water line, or is it DWV only?
The Oatey 30246 handy pack is recommended for potable water, pressure pipe, conduit and DWV applications, and the cement complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements. So it isn't restricted to drain, waste and vent work, even though DWV is the typical application. On a potable line the NSF/ANSI 61 compliance is the item an inspector will look for.
2) What pipe sizes will one 4 oz can of Oatey regular clear PVC cement handle?
The regular-bodied clear cement is for all schedules and classes of PVC pipe and fittings up to 4 in. for Sch. 40, and up to 2 in. for Sch. 80 with interference fit. Above those sizes you're into a medium or heavy bodied cement, not this one. The purple primer in the same pack is not size limited the same way, it's formulated for all schedules and classes of PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings.
3) Can I use the Oatey purple primer on CPVC pipe too, or only PVC?
The purple primer in the 30246 pack works on all schedules and classes of both PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings. The clear cement it's packed with is a PVC cement, so for CPVC joints you'd prime with this and then solvent weld with a CPVC-rated cement instead.
4) It's below freezing on my jobsite. Can I still solvent weld with Oatey 30246?
No. The recommended application temperature range for this cement and primer is 40 F to 110 F (4 C to 43 C). Below 40 F the solvent weld won't cure the way it's supposed to, so either warm the pipe, fittings and cans into that range and work fast, or wait for the weather. The upper end matters too on a hot roof in summer, above 110 F the cement skins over before you can make the joint.
5) My inspector wants to see that a primer was used on the joints. Does the purple primer in this Oatey kit satisfy that?
That's exactly what the purple color is for. The primer in the 30246 pack is an industrial grade purple primer intended for areas where the plumbing code calls for verification that a primer was used, the purple stain left at the hub is the visual proof for the inspection. The cement itself is clear, so the purple ring is the only thing telling an inspector the joint was primed.

9) Is regular bodied clear cement the right choice, or should I be using medium or heavy bodied PVC cement?
Regular bodied clear is the right call for small diameter PVC where the fitting has an interference fit, up to 4 in. Sch. 40 and up to 2 in. Sch. 80. It's thinner, so it flows into a tight socket and doesn't leave heavy beads. Once you're running larger diameter pipe or the sockets have a looser fit, a medium or heavy bodied cement fills the gap better and is what you want instead. Clear also matters on exposed or finished work where a blue or gray cement would show.
