Blackburn ATL4002 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Blackburn ATL4002 compression lug take?
The ATL4002 is a 400 kcmil aluminum compression lug. The 400 in the part number is the conductor size it is die-crimped onto, and the barrel is aluminum bodied, so it terminates aluminum or copper conductors at that size in the usual dual-rated compression practice. The green color code on the lug identifies the 400 kcmil die.
2) Is this Blackburn lug UL listed, and what voltage is it rated for?
The ATL4002 carries UL file E9809 and is rated 35 kV, which puts it in range for medium-voltage terminations as well as ordinary 600 V distribution work.
3) Do I need a hydraulic crimper for the ATL4002, or can I torque it down like a mechanical lug?
It is a compression lug, not a mechanical set-screw type, so the barrel has to be die-crimped onto the conductor with a hydraulic or battery crimp tool using the die matching the green 400 kcmil color code. There is no set screw. If you want a bolt-down termination you can install with a hex key, you need a mechanical lug instead.
4) Why use a two-hole lug instead of a one-hole lug?
Two bolts keep the pad from rotating under fault current or vibration, which is why two-hole terminations are specified on service entrance gear, switchboards, and grounding connections. The ATL4002 is a two-hole pad on 1/2 inch stud centers. A one-hole lug is acceptable where the spec allows it, but it will not satisfy a drawing that calls for a two-hole NEMA pad.
5) Does the ATL4002 come with the mounting bolts and washers?
No. The lug is the terminal only. You supply the 1/2 inch bolts, nuts, and Belleville or flat washers to match the pad your gear uses, plus the joint compound if you are landing aluminum.
6) Is the ATL4002 sold individually or in a bag of multiples?
It is sold each, so quantity one gets you a single ATL4002 lug. Order one per conductor termination, and remember a parallel run needs one per phase conductor per end.
7) Where is the Blackburn ATL4002 manufactured?
Country of origin is Mexico. That is the data point most often needed for submittal packages and procurement paperwork on public work.
