Blackburn ATL3002 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Blackburn ATL3002 compression lug take?
The ATL3002 is sized for 300 kcmil conductor, and it's an aluminum body, so it terminates aluminum or copper cable within that size. One conductor per lug, crimped with a compression tool and the correct die for 300 kcmil aluminum.
2) Will the ATL3002 bolt to a 1/2 inch stud pad on my panelboard or transformer?
Yes. It's a two-hole lug drilled for 1/2 inch hardware, so it lands on a 1/2 inch stud or bolt pad. Two holes means it resists rotation on the pad, which is what most switchgear and transformer terminations call for.
3) Is this lug UL listed for medium voltage work?
The ATL3002 carries UL file E9809 and is rated 35 kV, so it's usable on medium voltage terminations up to that class as well as ordinary 600 V work.
4) What does the blue color code on this Blackburn lug mean?
Blue on the ATL3002 is the crimp die color code. When you set up the compression tool, match the die and the number of crimps to the blue index for 300 kcmil aluminum. It is not a phase or voltage marking.
5) Can I use a one-hole lug instead of this two-hole version?
Only if the equipment pad is drilled for one bolt. A two-hole pad needs a two-hole lug like the ATL3002, and bolting a single-hole lug to it leaves the termination free to twist. Two-hole is also what most utility and medium voltage specs require on flat pads.
6) Do I need a special tool to install the ATL3002, or can it be bolted on?
It's a compression lug, not a mechanical set-screw lug, so the conductor barrel has to be crimped with a hydraulic or battery compression tool and the matching die. The bolt holes only handle the pad connection. If you don't have a compression tool on the job, you want a mechanical lug instead.
7) Can I use this aluminum lug on a copper conductor?
Yes, the ATL3002 is a dual-rated aluminum-body compression lug for 300 kcmil, so it takes copper or aluminum cable of that size. Where aluminum meets a dissimilar metal pad, use the appropriate joint compound and torque per the equipment label.
8) Does the ATL3002 come as a single piece or in a bag of multiples?
Sold individually, each. Order one per conductor you're terminating, so a three-phase plus neutral run needs four.
9) What is the manufacturer part number and where is this lug made?
Part number ATL3002 from Blackburn, manufactured in Mexico.
