Blackburn ATL6002 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What conductor size does the Blackburn ATL6002 compression lug take?
The ATL6002 is a 600 kcmil aluminum compression lug. It is a one-size, one-conductor terminal, so it crimps onto 600 kcmil cable only, not a range. Being aluminum bodied it is dual rated for use on aluminum or copper conductors of that size when installed with the correct die and compound.
2) Is the ATL6002 lug UL listed, and what voltage is it rated for?
It carries UL file E9809 and is rated 35 kV, which covers medium-voltage terminations as well as ordinary 600 V feeder work. That rating is the reason it shows up on utility and substation jobs rather than just panel feeders.
3) Why use a two-hole lug instead of a single-hole lug on a 600 kcmil feeder?
Two bolts keep a heavy 600 kcmil termination from rotating on the pad under fault current and cable pull, and most utility and industrial specs call for two-hole terminations on large feeders and grounding connections. A single-hole lug of the same size will carry the current but can turn on its bolt. The ATL6002 gives you the two-hole 1/2 inch pattern.
4) Does the ATL6002 come with bolts, or do I need to supply mounting hardware?
Only the lug ships. The 1/2 inch bolts, nuts, washers and any Belleville washers your spec calls for are separate, as is the crimp die for the barrel. Aluminum compression lugs also need the joint compound for the conductor.
5) What is the black coating on the Blackburn ATL6002 for?
The lug is finished black, an oxide inhibiting coating typical of aluminum compression connectors. It helps protect the barrel and pad in damp and outdoor enclosures. You still fill the barrel with the inhibitor supplied or specified for aluminum conductor before crimping.
6) Is the ATL6002 sold individually or in a bag of lugs?
It is sold each, so one lug per unit. Count your terminations and order accordingly, one per conductor end, plus spares if you are crimping in the field where a bad crimp means cutting the lug off.
7) Where is the Blackburn ATL6002 made?
Country of origin is Mexico. It is a Blackburn branded connector, which matters if your submittal package requires origin documentation or an approved-manufacturer list.
