Kraloy 78561 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Kraloy 4 inch 45 degree PVC elbow be direct buried or encased in concrete?
Yes. The Kraloy 40STD4045 elbow is approved for exposed, concrete encased, and direct burial runs, which is why it turns up in parking garages, street and highway lighting, subways, bridges and tunnels, and utility work. Same fitting for all three methods, so you are not switching part numbers between an exposed riser and the buried portion of the same run.
2) How do the ends on this 4 inch PVC 45 degree elbow connect, and do I need glue?
Both ends are plain (socket by socket, SPxSP), so this is a solvent weld fitting. You cut the conduit square, deburr, prime and cement it into the bell ends. There are no threads and no gasket, so PVC conduit cement is required and is not supplied with the fitting. Don't use it as a threaded transition; you'd need a separate male adapter for that.
3) Is this Kraloy elbow Schedule 40 or Schedule 80, and will it mate with my existing conduit?
It's Schedule 40 rigid nonmetallic PVC. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 conduit share the same outside diameter at a given trade size, so a 4 inch Schedule 80 conduit will still solvent weld into this 4 inch Schedule 40 bell. The difference is wall thickness and impact rating, not fit. If the spec on the drawing calls for Schedule 80 fittings in a physically exposed location, order the Schedule 80 elbow instead of this one.
4) Is the Kraloy 078561 UL listed for electrical conduit use?
It carries UL 651, the standard covering Schedule 40 and 80 rigid PVC conduit and fittings, and it is NAFTA compliant. For an inspector on a commercial or institutional job, UL 651 is the listing they want to see on a nonmetallic raceway fitting.
5) Should I use two 45 degree elbows or one 90 for a conduit offset?
Two 45s are the usual call when you need to jog a run around an obstruction or step a duct bank over, because each 45 costs you less pulling friction than a 90 and the sweep is gentler on the cable jacket. A single 90 is the right part when you're actually turning a corner or coming up out of a slab. Remember the code limit of 360 degrees total bend between pull points, so four of these 45s uses up your allowance the same as two 90s.
6) Is this elbow OK for a car wash, water treatment plant or food processing facility?
Those are exactly the environments Kraloy lists for it, along with marinas, fish plants, pulp and paper mills and steel mills. PVC doesn't corrode the way steel conduit does in wash-down, chemical and salt air exposure, which is the reason nonmetallic raceway gets specified in those buildings in the first place.
7) Is a standard radius 4 inch elbow the right choice for a cable pull, or do I need a large radius sweep?
This one is standard radius. For line voltage branch and feeder conductors that's normally fine. Where you're pulling fiber, communications cable or large jacketed cable with a tight minimum bend radius, most engineers spec a special or large radius sweep instead, because the standard radius bend can exceed the cable's allowable bend radius and damage it during the pull. Kraloy calls out cable and communications among the applications for this line, so check the cable manufacturer's minimum bend radius against the fitting before committing on those runs.
8) What is the manufacturer part number for the Kraloy 4 inch 45 degree standard radius elbow?
Kraloy lists it as 78561, catalog designation 40STD4045. The 40 is Schedule 40, STD is standard radius, 40 is the 4 inch trade size and 45 is the degree of bend. Distributors ordering against a bid sheet should quote 40STD4045 rather than the bare number, since Kraloy uses the same numbering pattern across sizes and bend angles.
